High-precision effective temperatures of 161 FGK supergiants from line-depth ratios Precise effective temperatures (Teff) are determined for 161FGK supergiants using method of line-depth ratios. We obtain a set of131 relations for temperatures of supergiants as a function of linedepths. These relations have been calibrated against previouslypublished accurate temperature estimates. The application range of themethod is 3600-7800 K (F0I-K5I). The internal error of a singlecalibration is less than 110 K, while combination of all calibrationsreduces uncertainty to only 5-30 K (standard error). The error in thezero-point is estimated to be less than 100-200 K. A significantadvantage of the line ratio method is its independence of theinterstellar reddening, and only modest sensitivity to abundance, macroturbulence, rotation and other factors.

| A 2dF survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud We present a catalogue of new spectral types for hot, luminous stars inthe Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The catalogue contains 4161 objects, giving an order-of-magnitude increase in the number of SMC stars withpublished spectroscopic classifications. The targets are primarily B-and A-type stars (2862 and 853 objects respectively), with oneWolf-Rayet, 139 O-type and 306 FG stars, sampling the main sequence to~mid-B. The selection and classification criteria are described, andobjects of particular interest are discussed, including UV-selectedtargets from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) experiment, Be andB[e] stars, `anomalous A supergiants' and composite-spectrum systems. Weexamine the incidence of Balmer-line emission, and the relationshipbetween Hγ equivalent width and absolute magnitude for BA stars.
| A Revised Calibration of the MV-W(O I 7774) Relationship using Hipparcos Data: Its Application to Cepheids and Evolved Stars A new calibration of the MV-W(O I 7774) relationship hasbeen calculated using better reddening and distance estimates for asample of 27 calibrator stars of spectral types A to G, based onaccurate parallaxes and proper motions from the Hipparcos and Tychocatalogues. The present calibration predicts absolute magnitude withaccuracies of +/-0.38mag for a sample covering a large range ofMV, from -9.5 to +0.35 mag. The color term included in aprevious paper has been dropped since its inclusion does not lead to anysignificant improvement in the calibration. The variation of the O I7774 feature in the classical cepheid SS Sct has been studied. Wecalculated a phase-dependent correction to random phase OI featurestrengths in Cepheids, such that it predicts mean absolute magnitudesusing the above calibration. After applying such a correction, we couldincrease the list of calibrators to 58 by adding MV and O Itriplet strength data for 31 classical Cepheids. The standard error ofthe calibration using the composite sample was comparable to thatobtained from the primary 27 calibrators, showing that it is possible tocalculate mean Cepheid luminosities from random phase observations ofthe O I 7774 feature. We use our derived calibrations to estimateMV for a set of evolved objects to be able to locate theirpositions in the HR diagram.
| Medium-Resolution Stellar Spectra in the L Band from 2400 to 3000 cm-1 (3.3 to 4.2 Microns) We present a brief atlas of L-band (3.3-4.2 μm) spectra for 42 starsplus the Sun and a sunspot observed at a resolving power of R~3000. Thiscontribution is intended to supplement our previous K-band, H-band, andJ-band spectral atlases. The L-band data, which cover some or all of the2400 to 3000 cm-1 (3.3-4.2 μm) region, are mainly forluminous late-type stars. In reducing these data, special care has beentaken to remove telluric features, especially water vapor. We identifytemperature- and luminosity-sensitive atomic and molecular indices toaid in the classification of stellar spectra in the L band. The data areavailable electronically.
| The Physical Basis of Luminosity Classification in the Late A-, F-, and Early G-Type Stars. II. Basic Parameters of Program Stars and the Role of Microturbulence Paper I of this series presented precise MK spectral types for 372 lateA-, F-, and early G-type stars with the aim of understanding the natureof luminosity classification on the MK spectral classification systemfor this range of spectral types. In this paper, a multidimensionaldownhill simplex technique is introduced to determine the basicparameters of the program stars from fits of synthetic spectra andfluxes with observed spectra and fluxes from Strömgren uvbyphotometry. This exercise yields useful calibrations of the MK spectralclassification system but, most importantly, gives insight into thephysical nature of luminosity classification on the MK spectralclassification system. In particular, we find that in this range ofspectral types, microturbulence appears to be at least as important asgravity in determining the MK luminosity type.
| The Physical Basis of Luminosity Classification in the Late A-, F-, and Early G-Type Stars. I. Precise Spectral Types for 372 Stars This is the first in a series of two papers that address the problem ofthe physical nature of luminosity classification in the late A-, F-, andearly G-type stars. In this paper, we present precise spectralclassifications of 372 stars on the MK system. For those stars in theset with Strömgren uvbyβ photometry, we derive reddenings andpresent a calibration of MK temperature types in terms of the intrinsicStrömgren (b-y)0 index. We also examine the relationshipbetween the luminosity class and the Strömgren c1 index, which measures the Balmer jump. The second paper will address thederivation of the physical parameters of these stars, and therelationships between these physical parameters and the luminosityclass. Stars classified in this paper include one new λ Bootisstar and 10 of the F- and G-type dwarfs with recently discoveredplanets.
| Library of Medium-Resolution Fiber Optic Echelle Spectra of F, G, K, and M Field Dwarfs to Giant Stars We present a library of Penn State Fiber Optic Echelle (FOE)observations of a sample of field stars with spectral types F to M andluminosity classes V to I. The spectral coverage is from 3800 to 10000Å with a nominal resolving power of 12,000. These spectra includemany of the spectral lines most widely used as optical and near-infraredindicators of chromospheric activity such as the Balmer lines (Hαto Hepsilon), Ca II H & K, the Mg I b triplet, Na I D_1, D_2, He ID_3, and Ca II IRT lines. There are also a large number of photosphericlines, which can also be affected by chromospheric activity, andtemperature-sensitive photospheric features such as TiO bands. Thespectra have been compiled with the goal of providing a set of standardsobserved at medium resolution. We have extensively used such data forthe study of active chromosphere stars by applying a spectralsubtraction technique. However, the data set presented here can also beutilized in a wide variety of ways ranging from radial velocitytemplates to study of variable stars and stellar population synthesis. This library can also be used for spectral classification purposes anddetermination of atmospheric parameters (T_eff, logg, [Fe/H]). A digitalversion of all the fully reduced spectra is available via ftp and theWorld Wide Web (WWW) in FITS format.
| Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. Based on observations made at the Haute ProvenceObservatory, France and on data from The Hipparcos Catalogue, ESA.Tables 4, 5 and 6 are only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.htm
| UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.
| Colour excesses of F-G supergiants and Cepheids from Geneva photometry. A reddening scale for F-G supergiants and Cepheids is presented.Supergiants with low reddenings or in clusters form the basis of thecalibration. In this sense, it is entirely empirical. The data have beenobtained in the Geneva photometric system. Comparisons with otherreddening scales show no disagreement. The only problem is with Fernie'sscale for Cepheids (1990), where a systematic trend exists. Its originis not clear. It is suggested to extend the number of supergiants withindependently obtained colour excesses in order to test the existence ofa possible luminosity dependence of the calibration. A period-colourrelation for Cepheids is deduced, on the basis of the present reddeningcorrections. It gives strong support for V473 Lyr being a secondovertone pulsator.
| Optical spectroscopy of Z Canis Majoris, V1057 Cygni, and FU Orionis - Accretion disks and signatures of disk winds High resolution, high SNR optical spectra have been used to investigatethe hypothesis that in outburst, FU Ori objects are self-luminousaccretion disks whose light dominates at optical and near-IRwavelengths. Strong evidence has been found for linewidth versuswavelength correlation in good agreement with model predictions for ZCMa and V1057 Cyg, but not for FU Ori itself. Linewidth variescontinuously with wavelength at optical wavelengths in the former twoobjects, In the case of FU Ori, it is argued that a combination ofstrong wind components to spectral lines, and surface gravity possiblybeing lower than that of supergiants, conceals the underlying linewidthversus wavelength relationship. A marginal correlation is found betweenlinewidth and lower excitation potential in all three objects. Syntheticdisk spectra are subtracted from observed spectral, and remarkably goodfits are found for all three objects for wavelengths longer than about5000 A.
| Photometry of F-K type bright giants and supergiants. I - Intermediate band and H-Beta observations Over 1500 observations of 560 bright giants and supergiants of types F-Kare presented and compared to the observations by Gray and Olsen (1991).The present results include intermediate-band which is slightlydifferent from the Stromgren data by Gray and Olsen due to a differentwidth for the v filter. A systematic difference in m(1) - M(1) withdecreasing temperature is noted in the two H-Beta data sets, and thecorrelations are defined.

| LkH-alpha 198 and V 376 Cassiopeiae - Speckle interferometric and polarimetric observations of circumstellar dust The circumstellar material close to the stellar sources is investigated, and its distribution and its relations to the general optical appearanceand the orientation of the molecular outflow are determined. Speckleobservations were carried out with a near-infrared speckleinterferometer between September 1986 and October 1989. LkH-alpha 198shows a complicated structure without clear alignment, and this is alsotrue on subarcsec (less than 1000 AU) scales. V 376 Cas appears to be abipolar nebula, seen nearly edge-on, oriented at position angle 120 deg.The orientations of LkH-alpha 198 and V 376 show no obvious relationswith the interstellar field direction. The near-infrared albedo ofcircumstellar dust is quite high both in the case of LkH-alpha 198 and V376 Cas, which indicates a larger particle size than typical forinterstellar dust.

| Nineteen new spectroscopic binaries and the rate of binary stars among F-M supergiants Nineteen spectroscopic binaries (SBs) have been discovered in radialvelocity measurements made with the CORAVEL spectrophotometer on 181northern F-M supergiants. The rate of detected SBs among northern F-Msupergiants is 21 percent, without any dependence on spectral orluminosity class. The study of the binary F-M supergiants with knownorbital elements indicates that all the systems with a period smallerthan the critical value P(circ) have a nearly circular orbit. The valueof P(circ) depends on the luminosity class, being 400-600 d for class Iband 2000-7000 d for class Ia. This circularization of the orbits may bedue to the transfer of angular momentum during the phase of binary massexchange.
| Ultraviolet and optical studies of binaries with luminous cool primaries and hot companions. II - BVRI observations Johnson system BVRI measurements are presented for 117 stars, most ofthem with no previous R and I photometry and many with no previous B andV. The prime objects for measurement are unresolved or nearly unresolvedbinaries containing a late-type giant or supergiant and an early-typecompanion. Other objects on the program include suspected binaries andother F-G giants and supergiants lacking at least R and I magnitudes. The variable F and G supergiants 1 Mon, 89 Her, HR 7308, HR 8157, HR8752, and rho-Cas and the eclipsing systems W Ser and ST Aqr wereobserved; HR 8752 showed significant dimming and cooling over 125 days.Several of Halliwell's (1979) candidates for nearby stars were measured.
