XID II: Statistical Cross-Association of ROSAT Bright Source Catalog X-ray Sources with 2MASS Point Source Catalog Near-Infrared Sources The 18,806 ROSAT All Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (RASS/BSC) X-raysources are quantitatively cross-associated with near-infrared (NIR)sources from the Two Micron All Sky Survey Point Source Catalog(2MASS/PSC). An association catalog is presented, listing the mostlikely counterpart for each RASS/BSC source, the probability Pid that the NIR source and X-ray source are uniquelyassociated, and the probability P no-id that none of the2MASS/PSC sources are associated with the X-ray source. The catalogincludes 3853 high quality (P id>0.98) X-ray-NIR matches,2280 medium quality (0.98 >= P id>0.9) matches, and4153 low quality (0.9 >= P id>0.5) matches. Of the highquality matches, 1418 are associations that are not listed in the SIMBADdatabase, and for which no high quality match with a USNO-A2 opticalsource was presented for the RASS/BSC source in previous work. Thepresent work offers a significant number of new associations withRASS/BSC objects that will require optical/NIR spectroscopy forclassification. For example, of the 6133 P id>0.92MASS/PSC counterparts presented in the association catalog, 2411 haveno classification listed in the SIMBAD database. These 2MASS/PSC sourceswill likely include scientifically useful examples of known sourceclasses of X-ray emitters (white dwarfs, coronally active stars, activegalactic nuclei), but may also contain previously unknown sourceclasses. It is determined that all coronally active stars in theRASS/BSC should have a counterpart in the 2MASS/PSC, and that the uniqueassociation of these RASS/BSC sources with their NIR counterparts thusis confusion limited.
| Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra - II. The stellar atmospheric parameters We present a homogeneous set of stellar atmospheric parameters(Teff, logg, [Fe/H]) for MILES, a new spectral stellarlibrary covering the range λλ 3525-7500Å at2.3Å (FWHM) spectral resolution. The library consists of 985 starsspanning a large range in atmospheric parameters, from super-metal-rich,cool stars to hot, metal-poor stars. The spectral resolution, spectraltype coverage and number of stars represent a substantial improvementover previous libraries used in population synthesis models. Theatmospheric parameters that we present here are the result of aprevious, extensive compilation from the literature. In order toconstruct a homogeneous data set of atmospheric parameters we have takenthe sample of stars of Soubiran, Katz & Cayrel, which has very welldetermined fundamental parameters, as the standard reference system forour field stars, and have calibrated and bootstrapped the data fromother papers against it. The atmospheric parameters for our clusterstars have also been revised and updated according to recent metallicityscales, colour-temperature relations and improved set of isochrones.
| Search for associations containing young stars (SACY). I. Sample and searching method We report results from a high-resolution optical spectroscopic surveyaimed to search for nearby young associations and young stars amongoptical counterparts of ROSAT All-Sky Survey X-ray sources in theSouthern Hemisphere. We selected 1953 late-type (B-V~≥~0.6),potentially young, optical counterparts out of a total of 9574 1RXSsources for follow-up observations. At least one high-resolutionspectrum was obtained for each of 1511 targets. This paper is the firstin a series presenting the results of the SACY survey. Here we describeour sample and our observations. We describe a convergence method in the(UVW) velocity space to find associations. As an example, we discuss thevalidity of this method in the framework of the β Pic Association.
| Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra A new stellar library developed for stellar population synthesismodelling is presented. The library consists of 985 stars spanning alarge range in atmospheric parameters. The spectra were obtained at the2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope and cover the range λλ3525-7500 Å at 2.3 Å (full width at half-maximum) spectralresolution. The spectral resolution, spectral-type coverage,flux-calibration accuracy and number of stars represent a substantialimprovement over previous libraries used in population-synthesis models.
| Contributions to the Nearby Stars (NStars) Project: Spectroscopy of Stars Earlier than M0 within 40 pc-The Southern Sample We are obtaining spectra, spectral types, and basic physical parametersfor the nearly 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 in theHipparcos catalog within 40 pc of the Sun. Here we report on resultsfor 1676 stars in the southern hemisphere observed at Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory and Steward Observatory. These resultsinclude new, precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physicalparameters (including the effective temperature, surface gravity, andmetallicity [M/H]), and measures of the chromospheric activity of ourprogram stars. We include notes on astrophysically interesting stars inthis sample, the metallicity distribution of the solar neighborhood, anda table of solar analogs. We also demonstrate that the bimodal nature ofthe distribution of the chromospheric activity parameterlogR'HK depends strongly on the metallicity, andwe explore the nature of the ``low-metallicity'' chromosphericallyactive K-type dwarfs.
| Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations for FGK stars: 2001 edition The catalogue presented here is a compilation of published atmosphericparameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) obtained from highresolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopic observations. This newedition has changed compared to the five previous versions. It is nowrestricted to intermediate and low mass stars (F, G and K stars). Itcontains 6354 determinations of (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) for3356 stars, including 909 stars in 79 stellar systems. The literature iscomplete between January 1980 and December 2000 and includes 378references. The catalogue is made up of two tables, one for field starsand one for stars in galactic associations, open and globular clustersand external galaxies. The catalogue is distributed through the CDSdatabase. Access to the catalogue with cross-identification to othersets of data is also possible with VizieR (Ochsenbein et al.\cite{och00}). The catalogue (Tables 1 and 2) is only available inelectronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr(130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/373/159 and VizieRhttp://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/.
| Two-colour photometry for 9473 components of close Hipparcos double and multiple stars Using observations obtained with the Tycho instrument of the ESAHipparcos satellite, a two-colour photometry is produced for componentsof more than 7 000 Hipparcos double and multiple stars with angularseparations 0.1 to 2.5 arcsec. We publish 9473 components of 5173systems with separations above 0.3 arcsec. The majority of them did nothave Tycho photometry in the Hipparcos catalogue. The magnitudes arederived in the Tycho B_T and V_T passbands, similar to the Johnsonpassbands. Photometrically resolved components of the binaries withstatistically significant trigonometric parallaxes can be put on an HRdiagram, the majority of them for the first time. Based on observationsmade with the ESA Hipparcos satellite.
| The evolutionary status of activity-selected solar-type stars and of T Tauri stars as derived from HIPPARCOS parallaxes: evidence for long-lived T Tauri disks? We have used the Hipparcos parallaxes to study the evolutionary statusof a sample of stars with spectral types from late F to M0 (hereafter``solar-type stars''), selected on the basis of their activity, mainlyfrom Einstein-based surveys. The parallaxes have been used to place theobjects in the H-R diagram, determining their age by comparison withtheoretical evolutionary tracks and observational main sequences. Thisage is compared with age estimates derived from the lithium abundance, the activity level and the presence of circumstellar disks. Tocomplement our sample at the young end we have also studied theHipparcos-determined distances of a sample of optically-selectedpre-main sequence stars, mostly classical T Tauri stars (CTTS). SomeCTTS appear to be much nearer to us than previously determined, and faraway from their putative parent cloud. This implies a significantlylarger age providing observational evidence for the existence oflong-lived T Tauri disks which could produce slow rotators on theZero-Age Main Sequence (ZAMS). None of the above-mentioned age proxiesappears to reliably and unambiguously select very young stars in therange of spectral types considered here, with some apparently very youngobjects effectively lying onto or very close to the main sequence. Theattribution of ages to young solar-type stars on the basis of any of thestandard proxies may thus significantly under- or over-estimate theevolutionary age of the object. Caution must therefore be exercised whenattributing ages to individual stars, and claims about the large numberof PMS stars found in X-ray based surveys may need to be at least inpart reconsidered in this light. Based on data from the ESA Hipparcossatellite.
| HIPPARCOS distances of X-ray selected stars: implications on their nature as stellar population. We present the parallaxes, measured by Hipparcos, for a sample of X-rayselected stars. The stars belong to the stellar sample of the EinsteinExtended Medium Sensitivity Survey. They are all at galactic latitude|b|>20deg, and are generally far away from known star formingregions. Several of these stars show lithium abundance and activitylevel typical of very young stars with ages comparable to that of thePleiades. We show that the majority of our sample stars are on the mainsequence, with only =~20% being giants. We do not find a significantpresence of pre-main sequence stars in our sample, notwithstanding thefact that some of our stars have a considerable lithium abundance, showing that the stars observed are most likely young and activemain-sequence objects.
| On the comparison between spectroscopic and photometric metallicity measurements in active solar-type stars. We present spectroscopic determinations of the Fe abundance in a sampleof K-type stars selected from the X-ray flux-limited Einstein ExtendedMedium Sensitivity Survey. These stars have been shown to have a lowvalue of the m_1_ Stroemgren photometric index implying low metalabundances, similar to the abundance observed in Pop. II stars. Yetthese cool stars are not expected to be metal-poor, being most likelyyoung and thus metal-rich. Based on an equivalent width-based abundanceanalysis which uses high resolution spectra in the region around the LiI 6707.8Å doublet, we show that none of the stars investigatedshows any evidence for low metal abundances. Rather, all have solar oreven slightly super-solar abundances. Thus, for very active K stars, photometric metallicity determinations appear to be strongly biased, with the stars appearing to be of much lower metallicity than theyactually are. The stars in our sample are estimated to be coeval oryounger than those of the Pleiades. If, as we argue, the bias in thephotometric indices depends purely on the high activity level of thesestars, it is then likely that all stars sufficiently young to havesimilar activity levels would display similar photometric anomalies. Wethen predict that a non-negligible fraction of the disk populationK-type stars are expected to show comparable anomalies in theirphotometric indices. These stars will masquerade as Pop. II stars inphotometric surveys, and significantly contaminate Pop. II star samplesselected on the basis of photometric properties alone, down to quitefaint magnitudes.

| Stroemgren four-color photometry of X-ray active late-type stars: Evidence for activity-induced deficiency in the m_1_ index. We present the results of a uvby-β photometric study of a sample ofactive late-type stars (F-K) selected from the Einstein Extended MediumSensitivity Survey. Our work shows the presence in the sample of a starpopulation with the photometric index c_1_ typical of main sequencestars and an unexpected deficiency in m_1_ index. Stars with moreanomalous values of m_1_ have also very high values of f_ X_/f_V_ andX-ray surface fluxes, near the "saturation" limit observed in the mostactive stars and similar to the flux observed in solar active regions. We discuss these results in the light of similar results found in theSun comparing m_1_ indices in quiet and active regions and in othersamples of active stars.

| Lithium, X-ray activity and rotation in an X-ray selected sample of solar-type stars We present an analysis of the connection between X-ray activity level, photospheric abundance of lithium and surface rotation in late typeactive main sequence stars (G and K), using the ratio between opticaland X-ray luminosity fx/fv as an uniform activity indicator. We performthis analysis for a sample of X-ray selected sources from Einstein-basedsurveys compared to stars from the Pleiades open cluster and to a sampleof active binary stars. We show that these parameters show differentdegrees of statistical correlation in the three samples. In particular, the Pleiades sample shows a significant correlation between all threequantities, while in the X-ray selected sample lithium and rotation aresignificantly correlated with each other but neither is correlated withthe activity level. No correlation is evident for the three quantitiesstudied in the active binary sample. We show how the behavior of theX-ray selected sample can be used to discriminate among differenthypothesis about the nature of the so-called `yellow star excess'observed in X-ray flux-limited surveys, showing that this is composed bya population of young, near Zero-Age Main Sequence (ZAMS) stars withcharacteristics similar to the Pleiades.

| The Einstein Observatory Extended Medium-Sensitivity Survey. II - The optical identifications The optical identifications are presented of the Einstein ExtendedMedium-Sensitivity Survey (EMSS), including the methodology used tooptically identify the EMSS sources and the uncertainties involved withthat process. The optical properties of the classes of X-ray, optical, and radio data for each of the identified and, as yet, unidentifiedsources of the survey are described. A new class of X-ray emitters, cooling flow galaxies, is proposed. The criteria used to determinewhether the proposed optical counterpart to the X-ray source is aplausible identification are described. Plausibility is based on theoptical classification of the counterpart, e.g., AGN, cluster, G star, and the X-ray-to-optical flux ratios previously observed for theseclasses of X-ray emitters. Two independent schemes of opticalclassification of the counterparts are used to check the plausibility ofthese identifications; one is based on moderate-resolution opticalspectroscopy, and the other, on inferred X-ray luminosity and theoverall energy distribution.
| The Einstein Observatory Extended Medium-Sensitivity Survey. I - X-ray data and analysis This paper presents the results of the analysis of the X-ray data andthe optical identification for the Einstein Observatory ExtendedMedium-Sensitivity Survey (EMSS). The survey consists of 835serendipitous sources detected at or above 4 times the rms level in 1435imaging proportional counter fields with centers located away from theGalactic plane. Their limiting sensitivities are about (5-300) x 10 tothe -14th ergs/sq cm sec in the 0.3-3.5-keV energy band. A total area of778 square deg of the high-Galactic-latitude sky has been covered. Thedata have been analyzed using the REV1 processing system, which takesinto account the nonuniformities of the detector. The resulting EMSScatalog of X-ray sources is a flux-limited and homogeneous sample ofastronomical objects that can be used for statistical studies.
