Abundances of a sample of A and F-type dwarf members of the Ursa Major Group Abundances of 11 chemical elements have been determined for 10 F and 12A dwarfs ("normal" and chemically peculiar) bona-fide and probablemembers of the Ursa Major Group (age about 500 Myr). The abundances weredetermined in a uniform manner using a model atmosphere analysis byminimising the chi-square of grids of synthetic spectra to observed highresolution high S/N (R ≃ 25 000 and R ≃ 70 000 ) spectraobtained in three narrow spectral regions centered around 5075 Å,5525 Å and 6160 Å. Specifically, Takeda's (1995)semi-automated procedure was used to derive the abundances of C, O, Na,Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Fe, Ni, Y, and Ba, the projected rotational velocityve sin i and the microturbulent velocity for each staranalysed. In graphs [X/H] versus T_eff, the A stars exhibit largerstar-to-star variations in [Fe/H], [Ni/H], and [Si/H] than the F dwarfsdo. The abundance of nickel is the only one that appears to becorrelated with that of iron.
| Stellar Kinematic Groups. II. A Reexamination of the Membership, Activity, and Age of the Ursa Major Group Utilizing Hipparcos parallaxes, original radial velocities and recentliterature values, new Ca II H and K emission measurements,literature-based abundance estimates, and updated photometry (includingrecent resolved measurements of close doubles), we revisit the UrsaMajor moving group membership status of some 220 stars to produce afinal clean list of nearly 60 assured members, based on kinematic andphotometric criteria. Scatter in the velocity dispersions and H-Rdiagram is correlated with trial activity-based membership assignments,indicating the usefulness of criteria based on photometric andchromospheric emission to examine membership. Closer inspection,however, shows that activity is considerably more robust at excludingmembership, failing to do so only for <=15% of objects, perhapsconsiderably less. Our UMa members demonstrate nonzero vertex deviationin the Bottlinger diagram, behavior seen in older and recent studies ofnearby young disk stars and perhaps related to Galactic spiralstructure. Comparison of isochrones and our final UMa group membersindicates an age of 500+/-100 Myr, some 200 Myr older than thecanonically quoted UMa age. Our UMa kinematic/photometric members' meanchromospheric emission levels, rotational velocities, and scattertherein are indistinguishable from values in the Hyades and smaller thanthose evinced by members of the younger Pleiades and M34 clusters,suggesting these characteristics decline rapidly with age over 200-500Myr. None of our UMa members demonstrate inordinately low absolutevalues of chromospheric emission, but several may show residual fluxes afactor of >=2 below a Hyades-defined lower envelope. If one defines aMaunder-like minimum in a relative sense, then the UMa results maysuggest that solar-type stars spend 10% of their entire main-sequencelives in periods of precipitously low activity, which is consistent withestimates from older field stars. As related asides, we note six evolvedstars (among our UMa nonmembers) with distinctive kinematics that liealong a 2 Gyr isochrone and appear to be late-type counterparts to diskF stars defining intermediate-age star streams in previous studies,identify a small number of potentially very young but isolated fieldstars, note that active stars (whether UMa members or not) in our samplelie very close to the solar composition zero-age main sequence, unlikeHipparcos-based positions in the H-R diagram of Pleiades dwarfs, andargue that some extant transformations of activity indices are notadequate for cool dwarfs, for which Ca II infrared triplet emissionseems to be a better proxy than Hα-based values for Ca II H and Kindices.
| Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. | The Near-Infrared Spectrum of the Planetary Nebula IC 5117 Infrared spectroscopy from 0.8 to 2.5 μm is presented for theplanetary nebula IC 5117. The emission lines of IC 5117 span a widerange of ionization that includes He II, [S III], [S II], [N I], andH2. The reddening measured from the hydrogen lines isE(B-V)=0.79, most of which is probably interstellar in origin. The He/Habundance ratio is 0.113+/-0.015, with approximately 10% of the heliumbeing doubly ionized. Using our measurements of [S II] and [S III] linesand published observations of [S IV], we find a sulfur abundance,relative to hydrogen, of N(S)/N(H)=7.8×10-6, orapproximately half the solar value. Fluxes and flux limits for severallines of molecular hydrogen are presented. Measurements of 1-0transitions, together with the limits on 2-1 transitions, indicateTvib~Trot=1900 K, suggesting a purely collisionalexcitation mechanism. The ortho-to-para ratio is ~3, a value that isalso indicative of collisional excitation. The presence of [C I]λ9850 is consistent with previous studies of IC 5117 thatindicated carbon is more abundant than oxygen. IC 5117 follows the trendof planetary nebulae that display bipolar outflows and H2emission to be carbon-rich. We confirm the results of Zhang & Kwok,who reported infrared continuum emission substantially in excess of thatproduced by the ionized gas. This emission is most likely due to hotdust (T~1300 K) and accounts for roughly half of the continuum between1.5 and 2 μm.
| Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. | Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
| A survey for rapid variability among early main-sequence A stars A survey of nonpeculiar early (A0-A5) main-sequence A stars for rapid,low-amplitude variability is presented. The survey is also anindependent test of the main-sequence mass-loss theory proposed byWillson et al. (1986). All observations were gathered with theUniversity of Wisconsin Two-Star Photometer. Several period-searchingmethods are used to analyze time series of differential-photometricdata. This instrument coupled with a computerized high-speed datacollection system was used with small telescopes at Pine BluffObservatory and Table Mountain Observatory. Several period-searchmethods are used to analyze time series of differential-photometricdata. This instrument and data-reduction technique allow millimagnitudelight variations to be detected. The survey also discovered severallow-amplitude Delta Sct stars, all of which are in or blueward of therecognized instability strip.
| The Sirius supercluster in the FK5 Fifty-five stars in the FK5 or with PPM(H) quality proper motions arediscussed as members of the Sirius supercluster. The convergent point ofthe supercluster motion is (A, D) = (20.55h -38.1 deg) and the spacevelocity is V(T) = 18.6 + 0.005X km/s, where X is the radial distance ofthe members from the sun. The member stars indicate (Fe/H) Hyades -(Fe/H) Sirius = 0.18 dex from both photometric and spectroscopicevidence. The bulk of the supercluster members fall into two age groups,6.3 x 10 exp 8 and 10 exp 9 yr on the basis of models with convectiveovershoot. The available observations of chromospheric activity in Mg II(h and k) are quantized into three well-defined groups for both Siriussupercluster and Hyades cluster dwarfs. For 20 supercluster members withcluster parallax greater than 0.03 arcsec the ratio ofpi(cluster)/pi(trigonometric) = 0.95 +/- 0.20(sigma).

| Starbursts, binary stars, and blue stragglers in local superclusters and groups. I - The very young disk and young disk populations The distributions in the HR diagram with theoretical time-constant locifor stars in several young clusters and superclusters are compared todemonstrate that 'blue stragglers' in these aggregates are mostfrequently simply single massive (mode B) stars formed in bursts of starformation that occur at discrete intervals in time following theformation of the bulk of the low-mass (mode A) stars in the aggregate.The characteristics of the close binary systems in these aggregates areexamined to show that, in several cases, mass transfer by Roche lobeoverflow has or will occur and that, in some instances, the system wouldhave appeared as a blue straggler prior to the mass-transfer event, and,in other instances, mass transfer will lead to the identification of thesystem as a blue straggler. Thus, it is concluded that the bluestraggler phenomenon has at least two distinct physical origins: it mayoriginate from delayed formation (starbursts) or from 'delayedevolution' in some close binaries (mass transfer from an evolvedprimary).
| The S201 far-ultraviolet imaging survey. II - A field in Cygnus Far-ultraviolet imagery of a region in Cygnus, a 20 deg diameter fieldcentered near (1950) R. A. 21 h 31.2 m decl. +37 deg 25 arcmin, wasobtained by the S201 far-ultraviolet camera during the Apollo 16mission. In a 10 minute exposure covering the 1250-1600 A wavelengthrange (effective wavelength 1400 A), 730 star images can be detected,corresponding to a limiting ultraviolet magnitude of about m (1400) =10. Assuming nominal interstellar extinction values in this region nearthe galactic plane, this result corresponds to the detection of A0 Vstars to a distance of 300 pc and of B0 V stars to 1500 pc.Uncertainties in spectral classification and interstellar extinction forindividual objects are probably more significant than calibration ormeasurement errors. Most of the objects detected are identified withstars in the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Star Catalog (1966),or the Catalog of Stellar Identifications (1979) or both, but 87 objectsremain unidentified (or are identified with late-type stars).
| 'Differential Speckle Interferometry', a new tool for double star research Speckle interferometry is a powerful tool for close binary star researchallowing angular resolutions as small as 20 milliarcsecond. A techniqueis proposed to resolve spectroscopic binaries with even smallerseparations. It uses the fact that speckle images taken in one or theother of the Doppler shifted spectral lines give a different intensityweighting of the two components of the binary. The location of thespeckles in the two speckle images is therefore different, the directionof the displacement being related to the position angle of the binary,the amount of the displacement being related to its separation. Sincethe location of speckles can be determined with a much higher precisionthan their diameter, this creates the possibility for submilliarcsecondobservations. This paper describes an experiment being started now touse this so-called 'Differential Speckle Interferometry' technique forthe study of binaries, stellar rotation, stellar chromospheres, Ap starsand other objects.
| Polarization measurements of 313 nearby stars The linear polarization of 313 low galactic latitude stars has beenmeasured. With few exceptions all program stars have a spectral typelater than B9 and are within 600 parsec of the sun. 181 stars aresituated at the southern sky and 132 at the northern sky.
